Iron plus tablet

Dosage form:

40 sugar coated tablets in the PET or blister.

 

 

Ingredients:

Ferrous ion(II) 50 mg, Emblic myrobalan, Chebulic myrobalan, Belleric myrobalan, Black pepper, Long pepper, Ginger, Sedge, Leadwort, Dill seed.

 

 

Composition:

This medication contains Ferrous sulfate which is a major component of forming hemoglobin.There are herbal ingredients which increase the absorption of active ingredients and decrease some side effects such as constipation and rashes. 

 

 

Indications:

Iron deficiency anemia.

 

 

Dosage:

1) For prevention of Iron deficiency anemia take one tablet per day.

2) For mild anemia 1-2 tablets per day.

3) For acute deficiency 2-4 tablets per day.

4) For pediatric deficiency (age 8-12) take one tablet.

5) In pregnancy, unless otherwise prescribed, 1 tablet per day.

 

 

Mechanism of Action:

Ascorbic acid in Amla and Piperine in black pepper can increase Iron absorption and drug bioavailability. Gingerol the active ingredient in ginger can prevent nausea. 

 

 

Side effects:

Hemosiderosis (is a form of iron overload disorder resulting in the accumulation of hemosiderin).In this product, gastrointestinal complications and side effects have been reduced comparing to similar products.

 

 

Contraindication:

Thalassemia and Iron overload disorders. 

 

 

Drug interaction:

In case of using Tetracycline (Antibiotic), Anti-Acids and penicillamine consult with your pharmacist or physician. Ferrous sulfate can decrease the absorption of some medications such as Levodopa, Levothyroxine and quinolones, Bisphosphonates (like Alendronate).  Hence it is better to take the medication at least two hours apart from these medicines.  

 

 

Food interactions:

Don’t use this drug with egg, milk, caffeine containing beverages like tea or coffee.

 

 

Precautions:

Don’t chew or crush tablets. Take the tablet with a whole glass of water. If you miss a dose, take the tablet as soon as possible. For better action take it with meal. Because of the stimulant effects of iron on GIT mucosa, people with GIT ulcers, ulcerative colitis and hepatitis take it with precaution. In case of using other Iron containing medicine, especially in pregnancy and lactation consult with your pharmacist or physician. Avoid taking higher amount than prescribed.

 

 

Using during pregnancy and lactation:

It is not recommended during first trimester unless prescribed.
